Legendary New Zealand actor Temuera Morrison's number was finally called up again by Lucasfilm when he appeared as Boba Fett, the most feared bounty hunter in the galaxy, in the hit Disney+ show "The Mandalorian." As part of the legacy of "Star Wars," Morrison has arguably followed the most unique path out of any other performer in the history of the franchise. First appearing as Jango Fett in "Attack of the Clones," Morrison's likeness became the basis for the Grand Army of the Republic's clones, while the unaltered clone of his "son" Boba grew up to be a gun for hire for Darth Vader.
Morrison would go on to supply voiceovers for the special editions of the original trilogy and numerous video games, along with a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo in "The Mandalorian" season 3, episode 4, "The Foundling." However, before Jon Favreau's series came along, Morrison spent years waiting in the wings, hoping to potentially play an adult Boba Fett who had (somehow) survived his fall into the Great Pit of Carkoon to fight another day.
He finally got his shot at playing Boba in "The Mandalorian" season 2, which led to the surprise spinoff series "The Book of Boba Fett." Morrison poured a lot of himself and his Maori culture into the role, and he's been incredibly passionate and vocal about his connection to Fett. It's no wonder then that he was a little upset when Din Djarin ended up taking center stage during a number of episodes in "The Book of Boba Fett," effectively upstaging Boba for a sped-up reunion with Mando and Grogu. Apparently, the favor was supposed to be returned in season 3 of "The Mandalorian" — but now that the show has just delivered a mostly satisfying finale, it's unclear if and when Fett will return.
Helmet On, Waiting By The Phone
"I was supposed to be in 'The Mandalorian' season 3 but nobody rang me," Temuera Morrison explained, speaking during his appearance at the SUPANOVA Comic Con & Gaming convention in Melbourne, Australia (via The Independent). "I was waiting for the phone call in New Zealand, waiting and wanting to give up." Indeed, coming off of the "Book of Boba Fett" finale, many viewers probably expected Fett to at least cameo in "The Mandalorian" season 3. Instead, the season focused on the reclaiming of Mandalore and Bo-Katan's restoration as rightful heir to the throne and wielder of the Darksaber.
For Morrison, it sounds like he prefers wrist rockets, dart launchers, and flame throwers to the ancient black-bladed lightsaber created by Pre Vizsla:
"Well that Mando guy stole a few chapters of my book. It was painful watching him turn up with some black new lethal sword. And the way he turned up in my 'Book of Boba,' he just destroyed everybody. I'm sure this guy is … ah … ruining my show. But I couldn't say anything. I'm not the writer, so I have to bear it I guess."
Although Morrison seems a little miffed about not getting the call for season 3, he's also probably just having fun sending a few jabs Mando's way. These comments were said at a comic convention, after all, and the crowds usually love little "controversies" like this and "What If?" possibilities. Now that Moff Gideon has destroyed "some black new lethal sword" (as Morrison dubbed the Darksaber) and the Mandalore storyline has been tentatively wrapped up, it's far more likely "The Mandalorian" season 4 will see Din Djarin and Boba cross paths once again — what with Mando traveling the galaxy and teaching Din Grogu about The Way.
