It's been a pretty long wait for "Star Wars" fans but it is finally time to resume the journey of Cal Kestis, the former Jedi Padawan who survived Order 66 and is fighting to keep the ways of the Jedi Order alive. Cal has returned in a brand new game, "Star Wars Jedi: Survivor," the sequel to the much-beloved 2019 release "Jedi Fallen Order." It's been several years, meaning Cal has matured on his journey. But that also means we've advanced the overall timeline a bit. So, where does that leave us relative to other major events in a galaxy far, far away? Let's explain.

First, it's important to remember that the bulk of "Fallen Order" took place around five years after the events of "Revenge of the Sith." Much of "Star Wars" time is measured in either BBY (before the Battle of Yavin) or ABY (after the Battle of Yavin). The Battle of Yavin relates to the Death Star assault in "A New Hope," so we're essentially measuring time against George Lucas' original 1977 cinematic classic. For reference, "Revenge of the Sith" takes place around 19 BBY, with "Fallen Order" picking up at roughly 14 BBY.

Much like in the real world, where many of us have impatiently awaited a sequel to the 2019 game, "Survivor" picks up several years after the events of the previous installment. The new game is set five years after "Fallen Order," meaning it is around ten years after the execution of Order 66, or 9 BBY. That puts it in a pretty interesting place relative to other things that were going on in the galaxy around that time.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor's Place In The Timeline

What else was going on in the galaxy roughly nine years before Luke Skywalker helped the Rebellion blow up the Death Star? Most notably, the Disney+ series "Obi-Wan Kenobi" also takes place in 9 BBY, meaning that the Jedi who had been in hiding for a decade was finally getting back out into the world and connecting with the Force again. Does that mean that Cal Kestis is going to cross paths with Obi-Wan? No, not necessarily; it just provides some context for what was happening around that time.

We know that the Inquisitors were making the rounds in full force attempting to wipe out the last remaining remnants of the Jedi Order. Cal has dealt with these agents of evil before, and he'll certainly deal with them again. It also means that Darth Vader is more fully-formed in his identity as a dark lord of the Sith, and much further away from Anakin Skywalker, who all but died on the volcanic shores of Mustafar a decade earlier. Again, Cal has encountered Vader before, and Palpatine's right-hand man is surely not content to let him wander the galaxy.

So there we have it. This provides some context for those who intend to play the game. It does leave some questions though. Does Cal survive all the way to the events of the original trilogy? If so, where was he during those crucial events? Questions for another time, perhaps.
