If there is one, concurring television series that I could guarantee would get a laugh out of anyone, that show would be "The Righteous Gemstones." Hailing from "Eastbound & Down" architect Danny McBride, the HBO series taps into the religious sphere to tell a fictitious story about a family that created a multimedia empire through televangelism. A comedic and often times accurate reflection of real-life televangelists, "The Righteous Gemstones" features McBride in the starring role alongside an all-star ensemble cast that includes John Goodman, Adam Devine, and the never-not-funny Edi Patterson. Thankfully, the half-hour adult comedy will not be leaving audiences anytime soon.
During the show's second outing, "The Righteous Gemstones" was renewed for a third season. The HBO series captured the hearts of those familiar with McBride's previous work, while attending to an entirely new generation of viewers well-adjusted to his brand of humor. It's not often that a show can produce consistent laughs and tell a compelling story about family, but "The Righteous Gemstones" never fails to do so. Season 3 will feature new faces and attempt to up the ante after delivering a shocking and twisty second season that featured a surprising amount of dramatic weight. And, fortunately, we won't have to wait as much as we did the last time around.
When And Where To Watch The Righteous Gemstones Season 3
Unfortunately, there is currently no official release date for the third season of "The Righteous Gemstones." However, if we had to guess, a 2023 release window should be in the cards. Principal photography was underway during the summer and into the fall of 2022, which lends credence to our speculation. In the past, the first season premiered in August 2019, while the second season debuted in January 2022. Judging by the fact we still don't have a release date, it would not be shocking if "The Righteous Gemstones" season 3 began in the latter half of the year.
As with previous seasons, "The Righteous Gemstones" will be airing on HBO and streaming on HBO Max, presumably on Sundays. Even with all the shake-ups happening at Warner Bros. Discovery, "The Righteous Gemstones" continues to be a staple entry in the prestigious catalog of HBO. Moreover, there is no indication that production was delayed as it was during the height of the pandemic. This means we should be getting subsequent seasons quicker than usual, and see the sprawling story reach its natural conclusion at some point.
What Will Season 3 Be About?
Although there is no official synopsis yet for "The Righteous Gemstones" season 3, there is enough to speculate on from when we last saw the titular family. In fact, maybe a little too much. The previous season featured gunmen, betrayal, murder, accidental murder, violent pasts, and a lot of envious televangelists. Of course, the overarching narrative for that season concluded (the Lissons got their just deserts at the very end of the finale). But some things set up an even more bombastic season, including the fact the Gemstones are now the sole proprietors of the Zion's Landing project, a Christian timeshare resort and the latest addition to the Gemstone empire.
While there were quite a few reconciliations between family members and old friends, you never know what could come back to bite the Gemstones. The ever-so-problematic family continues to move up in the world, and it's only a matter of time before someone is successful at taking it all down. At least, that's how these things usually go. The Gemstones only narrowly skirted fate when investigative reporter Thaniel Block (Jason Schwartzman) accidentally killed himself before blowing up their whole operation.
Until then, there is still a lot of left to unpack from the Gemstone bloodline. "The Righteous Gemstones" is meant to be an epic tale spanning generations, the series creator revealed to Polygon during the first season:
"This one, I've set to be longer than anything we've done before. If I had my way, when this is done, it's like this epic, sprawling tale, like the f****** "Thorn Birds" or something. You'll know everybody in this family, cousins, great uncles, all these people. In my eyes, this season is chapter one."
The Cast And Crew Of The Righteous Gemstones Season 3
Despite a few death scares in the last season, "The Righteous Gemstones" will feature the return of our favorite televangelist family — Jesse Gemstone (Danny McBride), Dr. Eli Gemstone (John Goodman), Kelvin Gemstone (Adam Devine), Judy Gemstone (Edi Patterson), and Amber Gemstone (Cassidy Freeman). We also expect (and hope) the typical supporting cast to make their return as well, especially Walton Goggins as "Baby" Billy Freeman. Meanwhile, several new cast members promise to shake up the Gemstone status quo.
Steve Zahn, fresh off his Emmy nomination for "The White Lotus," has joined the cast of "The Righteous Gemstones" as Peter, a militia leader. No plot details on that front, but the brief character description is already promising. "3rd Rock from the Sun" star Kristen Johnston will be playing May-May Montgomery, a mysterious character that shares a past with the Gemstones family. No further information about their involvement in the overall narrative, but the latest additions to the cast are exciting, to say the least. Previously, "The Righteous Gemstones" assembled an all-star supporting cast for the second season.
Behind the scenes, "The Righteous Gemstones" creator Danny McBride continues to serve as executive producer and director, alongside Jody Hill and David Gordon Green. McBride shares writing credits with several writers, including series star Edi Patterson. A consistent backcourt is usually the sign of a long-lasting series, let's just hope the network continues to see what we do every week when it airs. The third season of "The Righteous Gemstones" will premiere in 2023 on HBO and HBO Max.
