With "Avatar: The Way of Water" primed to be the biggest movie of the holiday season, it's natural that folks will want to reacquaint themselves with the sci-fi epic that started it all. The theatrical re-release of James Cameron's 4K remaster a few months back not only proved that there is still an audience for this movie, but it also bumped it up a notch in the record books. For about a decade, the 2009 sci-fi adventure held the mantel of the highest grossing movie of all time, until "Avengers: Endgame" dethroned it. The Chinese re-release last year, along with the 2022 remaster, snatched it back, taking the film's global box office intake to $2.9 billion (with a B, remind you).
As much as folks on the internet bemoan that "Avatar" has no lasting cultural impact, the receipts say otherwise. Cameron's film was one of those cases where people who rarely go to the movies came out in droves to see the dazzling spectacle, along with the jaw-dropping use of 3D. Chances are that this same cluster has yet to see it since its initial theatrical release, so it's really smart on 20th Century Studio's part to start reaching out to them.
You can currently stream "Avatar" on Disney+, but as popular as the streaming service is, not everyone has a subscription. If you're still holding onto your cable package, you'll get a few chances to revisit the world of Pandora in the coming week.
Return To Pandora
According to a report from Variety, "Avatar" will be airing on a few of Disney's television markets. On December 11, 2022, ABC will air the near three-hour adventure at 7:00 P.M EST/PST. There's also FX, which will air it on both December 15 and December 18 at 8:00 P.M EST/PST. Lastly, Freeform will take its turn on December 26 at 7:30 P.M. EST/PST.
I think it's a really great idea to spread it out before and after "The Way of Water" hits theaters. There's already a lot of buzz going into the highly-anticipated sequel, but once the masses get their eyeballs on what Cameron has been toiling away at for over 13 years, the word of mouth is only going to grow from there.
Watching "Avatar" on television with commercials doesn't exactly sound like the best way to experience the grand scope of Pandora, but sometimes folks have to make do with what they got. As great as it would be to watch it on Disney+, the service is only streaming the HD transfer of the 2009 theatrical release for the time being. What alien dragons to we need to fly to stream the 4K version?
"Avatar: The Way of Water" is set to hit theaters on December 16, 2022.
