Every year, filmmaker Steve Soderbergh releases a list of everything he watched and read the previous year. It’s a fun little distraction that gives us some insight, however minor, into Soderbergh’s habits. This year’s list also comes with the news that late in 2021, Soderbergh is planning on releasing a 4K box set featuring seven of his films: Kafka, Schizopolis, Gray’s Anatomy, Full Frontal, Bubble, The Girlfriend Experience, and And Everything is Going Fine. On top of that, the Kafka disc will include a new cut of the film, while Schizopolis and Full Frontal have been “tightened.”
It’s here – Steven Soderbergh’s SEEN/READ list for 2020. As usual, the list is a fun mix of titles revealing Soderbergh’s eclectic tastes and habits. For instance: it looks like he watched David Fincher’s Mank at least four times, including rewatching it for the first time only two days after he initially viewed it; he’s also a Better Call Saul fan, which makes sense since it’s the best show on TV. And, just like the rest of us, Soderbergh takes some time around the holidays to watch Die Hard (he watched it on December 26). I’ll copy and paste the full list below, but first, some cool news for Soderbergh fans.
In addition to the list, the filmmaker also revealed that he’s “pretty sure” sometime during the fourth quarter of 2021 (which could mean anytime after October) he’ll be releasing a box set featuring seven of his films remastered in 4K. Not only that, but the set will include the long-unavailable Kafka – complete with a new cut. Released in 1991, Kafka is a moody black and white film that imagined writer Franz Kafka (as played by Jeremy Irons) living one of his stories. I saw the film on VHS approximately 100 years ago, and I’ve always loved it. Sadly, it was a box office bomb and has never been available on DVD or Blu-ray.
Soderbergh has been talking about a Blu-ray release for a while now, and there was even some speculation it might end up as part of the Criterion Collection. Soderbergh gives no indication that’s the case now (he merely says he’ll be selling the box set on his website), but he does add that the release will include two different cuts of the film: the theatrical version and a new cut, titled Mr. Kneff.
Last year, Soderbergh teased his new cut of Kafka, saying that compared to the theatrical version, it was “pretty radically different, something else entirely,” and adding:
“I’m overhauling Kafka completely. It’s funny—wrapping a movie 22 years later! But the rights had reverted back to me and Paul Rassam, an executive producer, and he said, ‘I know you were never really happy with it. Do you want to go back in and play around?’ We shot some inserts while we were doing Side Effects. I’m also dubbing the whole thing into German so the accent issue goes away. And Lem [Dobbs] and I have been working on recalibrating some of the dialogue and the storytelling. So it’s a completely different movie. The idea is to put them both out on disc.”
In addition to the Kafka re-edit, Schizopolis and Full Frontal have been tinkered with, too – although Soderbergh adds that they’ve just been “tightened,” as opposed to the “radically different” Kafka cut. To be clear: this isn’t the first time Soderbergh has teased this box set. Last year, Soderbergh said the box set would be a “collection of titles that weren’t made for studios, and in the case of ‘Kafka,’ hasn’t been available for a long, long time.” But now we have a better idea of when to expect it, and what to expect on it.
And now, without further ado, here’s the list.
