Using an information extraction technique called sparse modeling, a collaboration of researchers has developed the world's first method of analyzing a material's atomic structure using only measured data. This method needs no prior assumptions of atomic structure, which are required in conventional microstructure analysis methods. In a new study scientists show that all the DNA and RNA building blocks, or nucleobases, exhibit a non-zero polarization in the presence of polar atoms or molecules such as amidogen and carbonyl.
